European aerospace giant Airbus demonstrated how solar power could be beamed from space in a new experiment.

So far, the wireless transmission system has only bridged the distance of a little over 100 feet (30 meters), but engineers are confident they can increase its range to reach all the way to space within the next decade.

The demonstration, which took place at Airbus' X-Works Innovation Factory in Germany in September, saw electrical power transmitted from a photovoltaic panel in the form of microwaves to a receiver some 118 feet (36 m) away. The beamed energy lit up a model city and powered a hydrogen generator and a fridge containing alcohol-free beer that the audience later enjoyed.

Even though it might seem as a long way to go from 118 feet to Earth's orbit, Airbus engineers believe that "the first operating Power Beaming prototypes could be in use" by the early 2030s.

かなり遅くの更新になりました。

You don't see this very often these days: prices going down.

The U.S. Transportation Security Administration and its enrollment partner IDEMIA, eager to get more travelers signed up for the queue-cutting TSA PreCheck program, have marked down the price of membership.

The enrollment fee is now $78, down from $85.

Members of TSA PreCheck are issued a special Known Traveler Number (KTN) valid for 5 years. When a KTN is added to a reservation for a flight on 80+ participating airlines at more than 200 airports, ticket holders are entitled to use the expedited PreCheck security inspection lanes, where passengers speed through the checkpoint without having to remove their shoes or most of their consumer electronics from luggage. (Here's our indispensable guide to applying for TSA PreCheck.)

The go-team from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is painstakingly sifting through wreckage of two World War II-era aircraft that collided midair during the Wings Over Dallas airshow on Saturday. Six people were killed—five on the B-17G Texas Raiders and one on the Bell P-63F Kingcobra. Both aircraft, B-17G, N7227C, and Bell P-63F, N6763, are registered to the American Airpower Heritage Flying Museum. Both were part of the Dallas, Texas-based Commemorative Air Force, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and showing historical aircraft. The CAF has released the names of the pilots killed in the accident. Aboard the B-17G: Terry Barker, Dan Ragan, Leonard “Len” Root, Curt Rowe, and Kevin “K5” Michels. Aboard the P-63F: Craig Hutain. The accident happened in full view of the spectators, many of whom caught the event with smartphone cameras. These images quickly flooded social media and the accident was viewed from several angles. During a press conference held late Sunday, Michael Graham of the NTSB requested that, “If anyone in the public has photos or videos of the accident, we would like to ask that you please share them with the NTSB; send to: witness@NTSB.gov.”

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration’s move to block exports of advanced computer chips to China is signaling a new phase in relations between the globe’s two largest economies — one in which trade matters less than an increasingly heated competition to be the world’s leading technological and military power.

The aggressive move, announced last month, will help set the tone for President Joe Biden’s upcoming meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday on the sidelines of the Group of 20 summit in Asia. It’s evidence of Biden’s determination to “manage” the U.S. competition with China, whose officials were quick to condemn the export ban.

After more than two decades in which the focus was on expansion of trade and global growth, both countries are openly prioritizing their national interests as the world economy struggles with high inflation and the risk of recessions. The U.S. and China have each identified the development and production of computer chips as vital for economic growth and their own security interests.

On-demand private aviation company Wheels Up (NYSE: UP) reported third-quarter revenue of $420.4 million, a 39 percent increase over the same period last year, which it attributes to strong customer demand amid its embattled stock price.

“Our strong foundation, with an iconic brand and large base of loyal customers, helped drive another record revenue performance in the third quarter. It further reinforces the strength of our demand, even in this uncertain macroeconomic environment,” Kenny Dichter, Wheels Up chairman and CEO, said in an investor statement.

Since going public via a SPAC-IPO last summer, Wheels Up’s share price, however, has slumped in the public markets amid questions about its addressable market and profitability.

HeathrowのDeportation Center(国外退去のための一時センター)で騒動があったみたいですね!

お目を通してみて下さい。

When night fell last Friday, pandemonium erupted at Britain's biggest immigration deportation centre next to Heathrow.

Electricity and water had been off for 17 hours. In darkness, screaming inmates, earmarked for removal from the UK, broke up furniture and banged it on floors and walls.

They used tables and chairs to make fires in the exercise yard and crafted them into weapons to fight each other.

An acrid smell hung in the air as the inmates, failed asylum seekers and convicted criminals, burned bedding.

During the riot at the Harmondsworth centre in west London, staff locked themselves in offices. The interior of double-storey Beech House – for Albanian, Indian, Vietnamese, African and Algerian deportees – was almost completely destroyed.
