Sony never seemed to have enough PlayStation 5 stock since it launched, but still managed to sell 4.5 million of the consoles in 2020 — matching PS4 salesduring that console’s 2013 launch quarter. Combined with sales of 1.4 million PS4 units, Sony’s gaming business had its best fiscal quarter in history with 883.2 billion yen ($8.4 billion) in revenue, up 40 percent over 2019, the company announced.

Profits were also up 50 percent to 80.2 billion yen ($763 million), due to increased game sales amounting to 484 billion yen ($4.6 billion), which actually doubled the 240 billion yen ($2.3 billion) in hardware sales. Sony also saw a 9 percent boost in PlayStation Plus subscription and other network revenue.

At the moment, planes can only use up to a 50/50 blend of conventional and sustainable fuels.

‘Sustainable’

Boeing has vowed to make flights using its planes more eco-friendly within the next decade: The aviation titan has announced its commitment to make sure its planes can fly on 100 percent sustainable fuels by 2030. It explained that making the shift to sustainable fuels is the “safest and most measurable solution to reduce aviation carbon emissions in the coming decades.” It’s also a necessary step to take for the industry to achieve its goal of slashing its carbon emissions by 2050.

Sustainable aviation fuels are made from vegetable oil, animal fats, various agricultural and forestry waste and non-recyclable household waste, among other sources. In its announcement, the company notes that it successfully conducted test flights that used 100 percent sustainable fuels in the past. A FedEx 777 Freighter, in particular, became the first plane to fly without a conventional fuel blend back in 2018 under the Boeing ecoDemonstratorprogram.

Axiom Space announces crew for first all-private orbital mission

民間のSpace Missionとして ISS(International Space Station)へのCrew 4人を発表しました。

A year after it was selected to supply the first private module for the International Space Station (ISS), Axiom Space has announced the crew for the first-ever all private crewed orbital space mission. Still awaiting legal clearance and the green light from the 15-member ISS partnership, the Axiom Mission 1 (Ax-1) will carry four astronauts to the station for an eight-day stay.

The idea of private citizens instead of official government astronauts going into space isn't new. As far back as 1975, the Soviet Union was offering places on space missions to Warsaw Pact citizens for diplomatic and propaganda purposes. Since then, astronauts have been joined by mission specialists, journalists, and even paying tourists

China flies warplanes close to Taiwan in early test of Biden

ここに出てくるADIZ(Air Defense Identification Zone: 防空識別形)とか読者諸氏には馴染みのない単語も出て来ますが、時事用語としては普通の単語です。

CNN - China dispatched two large formations of warplanes close to the self-governing island of Taiwan over the weekend, presenting a significant foreign policy challenge to new United States President Joe Biden just days into his administration.
Taiwan's Defense Ministry said 13 Chinese planes entered the southwestern portion of the island's air defense identification zone (ADIZ) on Saturday followed by 15 on Sunday, prompting Taipei to take defensive measures, including scrambling fighter jets to monitor the Chinese flights.
According to Taiwan's Defense Ministry, Chinese military planes made more than 380 flights into the island's air defense identification zone last year. The US Federal Aviation Administration defines an ADIZ as "a designated area of airspace over land or water within which a country requires the immediate and positive identification, location, and air traffic control of aircraft in the interest of the country's national security."

'Kong bows to no one': Two beloved behemoths face off in first 'Godzilla vs. Kong' trailer

Even a pandemic can’t stop two gigantic icons from smacking each other around.

The fighters have been chosen, you just need to decide the screen: “Godzilla vs. Kong” arrives in theaters and streams on HBO Max March 26. The first trailer, released Sunday, teases – in appropriately epic style – the multiple throwdowns between two beloved movie monsters.

This pair of behemoths have met before, notably in 1963’s “King Kong vs. Godzilla,” but never in such blockbuster fashion and with modern special effects. And as it turns out, this popcorn flick has a plot, too: In director Adam Wingard’s adventure, a shackled Kong is being transported across the sea to find his true home.

After a slight delay, SpaceX has smashed a record for sending spacecraft into orbit. The company successfully launched its Transporter-1 mission carrying an unprecedented 143 satellites, including 133 commercial and government customer vehicles and 10 Starlink machines. The Falcon 9 rocket, which supported Crew Dragon Demo-2, landed aboard a drone ship in the Atlantic.

This was SpaceX’s first dedicated mission in its SmallSat Rideshare Program. The project helps make deliveries of cubesats and other small vessels practical for customers that might not otherwise afford them, with prices starting at a relatively low $1 million. To put it another way, the program is competition for the likes of Rocket Lab and Virgin Orbit.

Inside the Royal Navy’s futuristic training centre

From laser-guided missiles in combat, to virtual reality simulations in training, the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm’s Wildcat and Merlin Mk2 helicopters are powered by cutting-edge tech on their maritime mission.

It’s 2.00am over the icy North Sea and the Merlin Mk2 crew are in desperate straits. The aircraft is fast running out of fuel above the treacherous waters. They have two options: either land the helicopter back on the ship deck as it rolls among the violent sea, or plummet into the icy depths. With next-to-no-visibility and seconds ticking away, the crew has little choice but to hand their lives over to the pilot and pray they make it home.

Thankfully, it’s just a simulation. At the Royal Naval Air Stations of Culdrose and Yeovilton, this is the sort of scenario played out on repeat for crew members. Rather than ship decks and ocean waters, students are honing their abilities in virtual reality, within futuristic moving domes controlled by their instructors. Life-and-death situations from engine failure to bad weather are all reproduced with photo-realistic effects. “We have to make sure we can operate right at the edge of the envelope,” explains Lieutenant Commander Christopher Luke. “We’re trained to control an aircraft in zero visibility at the dead of night, in choppy waters.”

The Merlin Mk2 patrol chopper and the Wildcat attack helicopter act as the eyes and ears of any maritime operation. Lifting off from the frigate, they travel at speed scouting for enemies across the ocean, before reporting back to the ship. Both aircraft are fitted with an infrared camera and sonobuoys: sonar systems which can be dropped into the sea, acting as underwater radars. If required, the vehicles can also act as the mission's teeth – the Wildcat is equipped with laser-guided Martlet missiles, while the Merlin carries Sting Ray torpedoes.
