Virgin Orbit’s second launch demonstration flight has been smoother than its first. The company has carried customer satellites into space for the first time after the Cosmic Girl host aircraft successfully deployed the LauncherOne rocket over the Pacific Ocean for its latest test. The payload included nine missions from NASA and several universities, most of which were launching cubesats and other tiny orbiters.

LauncherOne had yet to release the satellites as of this writing, but Virgin said it had successfully crossed into space and entered orbit. The first demo ended abruptly after LauncherOne failed to ignite.

Millions of People Living and Working in Space
Blue's vision is a future where millions of people are living and working in space. In order to preserve Earth, our home, for our grandchildren’s grandchildren, we must go to space to tap its unlimited resources and energy. If we can lower the cost of access to space with reusable launch vehicles, we can all enable this dynamic future for humanity.

Cadillac's eVTOL is an electric, autonomous personal air taxi

今日の英語の習慣化の題材は、GE(General  Electric) 自動車製造会社 のCadillac と言う名前を冠したeVTOL(Electric Vertical Take-Off Landing)垂直離着陸機を製造、Air Taxi分野に参入すると発表しました。詳しくはGEの記事をお読みください♪

General Motors is telegraphing that it, too, plans to join the burgeoning eVTOL air-taxi business -- and the company plans to do it in style. As part of its virtual CESexpo, GM Exhibit Zero, the automaker on Tuesday revealed renderings and animations of a Cadillac-branded personal aircraft powered by batteries.

The sleek, electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft would be GM's first foray into aerial mobility, and the company says this four-rotor aircraft is powered by a 90-kWh battery to deliver speeds of up to 56 mph. Beyond that, details are scarce -- GM stopped short of offering more technical details, let alone committing to production or detailing a time frame in which we can expect to see these eVTOLs, as they're known, in the air. Based on the images, this looks like a single-seat drone, presumably for short urban hops executed autonomously.

Parler claims it was also dropped by Slack after Amazon and other tech giants cut ties with the controversial social media company

Slack has joined the growing list of tech companies refusing to do business with Parler, according to Parler CEO John Matze.

"Slack Technologies, which provided a chat messaging system for coordinating with the Parler Jury that enforces our terms of service, abruptly canceled their services to Parler," Matze claimed in a court filing Wednesday.

Slack did not respond to a request for comment on this story.

Matze submitted the filing as part of Parler's antitrust lawsuit against Amazon's cloud computing arm, Amazon Web Services.

Parler filed the lawsuit on Monday after AWS cut ties with the controversial social media company amid widespread reports that rioters who seized the US Capitol last week had used Parler to organize and incite violence.

"AWS's highly publicized break... allowed the media to mischaracterize Parler in ways that have alienated Parler's partners," Matze claimed, adding that, in canceling its contract with Parler, Slack cited "a violation of their own terms of service based on AWS's decision to drop Parler."

"Losing Slack makes it extremely difficult to effectively enforce our terms of service with our almost 600 volunteer and paid Jury members," Matze said in the filing.

Parler has faced massive fallout in the wake of last week's violence as various business partners have cut ties.

Virgin Orbit targets launch window opening January 10 for next orbital flight attempt

Virgin Orbit is wasting no time in 2021 getting back to active flight testing: The company has a window for its next orbital demonstration launch attempt that opens on Sunday, January 10, and that continues throughout the rest of the month. This follows an attempt last year made in May, which ended before the LauncherOne rocket reached orbit — shortly after it detached from the Cosmic Girl carrier aircraft, in fact.

While that mission didn’t go exactly as Virgin Orbit had hoped, it was a significant milestone for the small satellite launch company, and helped gather a significant amount of data about how the vehicle performs in flight. LauncherOne was able to briefly light its rocket booster before safety systems on board automatically shut it down. The company had been looking to fly this second test before the end of last year, but issues including COVID-19 meant that they only got as far as the wet dress rehearsal (essentially a run-through of everything leading up to the flight with the vehicles fully fueled).

SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 5, 2021-- (NASDAQ:AMZN) – Today, Amazon announced its first-ever purchase of eleven Boeing 767-300 aircraft, expanding its fleet to continue to serve customers. The purchases include seven aircraft from Delta and four aircraft from WestJet, which will join the network by 2022. Amazon Air’s fleet expansion comes at a time when customers are relying on fast, free shipping more than ever.

“Our goal is to continue delivering for customers across the U.S. in the way that they expect from Amazon, and purchasing our own aircraft is a natural next step toward that goal,” said Sarah Rhoads, Vice President of Amazon Global Air. “Having a mix of both leased and owned aircraft in our growing fleet allows us to better manage our operations, which in turn helps us to keep pace in meeting our customer promises.”
