pilot of a hydrogen-filled balloon that crashed into power lines before bursting into flames in Texas earlier this week said he was trying to make an emergency landing amid a hail of automatic gunfire, and suggested that the aircraft may have been mistaken for a Chinese spy balloon.

Krzystotf Zapart said he and co-pilot Pjotr Halas, members of the Poland 1 team piloting the sport balloon in the Gordon Bennett Gas Balloon Race, were passing over Kaufman County southeast of Dallas on Monday when they heard the distinct sound of gunfire. 

“We heard more and more automatic guns. It was not one shot, it was do, do, do, do, do, do … do, do, do, do, do," Zapart, who was burned on his arms and legs, told FOX 4 News. b
