今日の英語の習慣化の題材は、今アメリカ中西部を襲っている極寒波の話題です。

北極よりも寒いと言うことで、Polar Vortexと言う単語を使ってますね〜

Arctic-cold temperatures blasted the Midwest today. Here's what it looked like.
A deep freeze swept over the Midwest and parts of the Northeast today.

The frigid cold temperatures forced road, school and state office closures. Mail and train services were also suspended in some states.

In Chicago, officials set railroad tracks on fire because the extreme cold could cause defects.

This is what it looked across the rest of the Midwest today:

(CNN) — Want to see 16 sunrises in one day? Float in zero gravity? Be one of the few to have gazed upon our home planet from space?

In just two years' time, and for an astronomical $9.5 million dollars, it's claimed you can.
Interior renderings of the world's first luxury space hotel, Aurora Station, were unveiled Thursday for the first time.

Developed by US-based space technology start-up Orion Span, the fully modular space station will host six people at a time, including two crew members, for 12-day space travel tours.
It plans to welcome its first guests in 2022, with the station's launch happening in 2021.
"Our goal is to make space accessible to all," Frank Bunger, CEO and founder of Orion Span, said in a statement last year. "Upon launch, Aurora Station goes into service immediately, bringing travelers into space quickly and at a lower price point than ever seen before."

The unpiloted vehicle took off vertically, hovered for a few seconds, and then landed at the company’s test site in Manassas, Virginia. Boeing said that future flights will test forward, wing-borne flight, as well as the transition phase between vertical and forward-flight modes.

Secret Service members create challenge coin for working without pay

(CNN)-Special challenge coins are being distributed among US Secret Service personnel and their families, who are expressing frustration at the requirement they work without pay during the partial government shutdown.

The coins are paid for by agents or other personnel on their own -- they are not official and use no government money.
"DON'T WORRY, YOU'LL GET BACKPAY," is printed on one side of the coins, according to a photo obtained by CNN's Jake Tapper. The other side has "UNITED STATES SECRET SERVICE" and "ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL" printed on it.
